Conditional morality

What do you other writers and avid readers think about the anti-hero, the guy or girl who has a very defined set of morals even if the rest of us don't understand what it is? I like the anti-hero or as Kate Johnson calls him, the Omega male (in reference to the bane of my existence, the Alpha male those ridiculously overblown, ridiculously over wealthy, ridiculously powerful, ridiculously muscled and just plain ridiculous heroes of every Harlequin book of old.) as a hero. I like Zarek, I like Spike, I like Davy. I guess I just like characters who are at the ends of the spectrum.

I don't believe in the idea of conditional morality. I don't mean this like one might say, "I don't believe in the supernatural." I know conditional morality exists. I see it every day. Most people are governed more by a fear of getting caught than they are by a real conviction of the difference between right and wrong. Maybe I just like living in a black and white world, at least on paper, but I like to see a man be mostly good or mostly bad. I hate that wishy washy every man is bad when he has to be and good when he has to be crap. Be bad if you're going to be bad. Tear the whiskers off of kittens. Kick people while they're down. Call people names to their face. Or be good. Help everyone who needs it even if it doesn't profit you. Volunteer, give away your money. See good in everyone. Go ahead. But don't be nice just because someone is watching. Jeez. Get a spine. Or become an alpha male and get a convertible.

Whatever, just do it with some panache.

Song of the day: I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face, from My Fair Lady. Speaking of the Omega male, Henry Higgins is a perfect example. He started out a big old jerk and he ends the same way. Now he's just a jerk in love.

Quote of the day:

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.
Herm Albright.
